Construction drawing revision control

Give the team a clear record of drawing references and revisions. Connect the version under review to the site observations, decisions and documents that depend on it.

Register the drawing reference and revision

Upload the drawing with its reference, revision label and relevant project context. Check the document’s saved and processing state before using it. A filename alone rarely explains why a revision changed or whether it is the version the team should use. Maintain a consistent register so references can be understood across disciplines and project participants.

Keep the review context

When a revised drawing arrives, preserve the reason for the change and the review or release decision. Link relevant site observations or outstanding questions to the record. The purpose is to help the project team distinguish a newly received document from a reviewed version, and understand the information available when an earlier decision was made.

Share according to responsibility

Use the project’s permissions and release workflow when making drawings available to clients or other participants. Confirm who can upload, review and receive the record. Do not treat a shared link as a substitute for an agreed issue or transmittal process. Where a contract specifies notices or formal document exchange, follow that process alongside the project record.

Choose the right document-control scope

Evaluate your needs for model coordination, authoring integrations, sheet comparison and formal document-control standards before selecting a platform. Buildstance’s public workflow centres on project records and revision context. Autodesk Forma and specialist drawing platforms publish broader design and model capabilities. Validate the precise functions you need in a product demonstration.
